I Can Grow 2012
Burpee  Edible Gardening Team Members

Islands High School, Savannah, Georgia

For the last several months you’ve been reading blogs submitted by recipients of the 2011 Burpee Home Gardens “I Can Grow” Youth Garden Award. They’ve told stories and shared videos about what gardening has taught them, the fun they’ve had getting dirty and even some recipes they’ve created with their harvest.

To kick off the 2012 planting season, the Burpee Home Gardens team traveled to Savannah, Georgia, to help the students at Islands High School — a grand prize winner of the “I Can Grow” Youth Garden Award — install their very first school garden.

With beautiful weather on our side, the Burpee Home Gardens team joined a group of very excited students to plant more than 200 vegetables and herbs in their new garden. The support and interest from the community was overwhelming, and we were even greeted by news crews from all of the major stations in Savannah!

Check out our Facebook page to see local coverage of the event and photos from the planting day.

A team will soon be traveling to Philadelphia and then Brooklyn to help our other grand prize winners start their gardens.

Be sure to check back regularly as all the recipients of this year’s program will be posting videos and blogging about their garden experiences this season.
